Journal analyzed 1.2 million state records of causes
When Suzanne Brand of Clinton Corners contracted Lyme disease in 1994, a doctor suggested she had an illness that other sufferers say they have also been tagged with: multiple sclerosis. She disagreed, and a Lyme test proved her right. Brand believes that Lyme disease cases — and deaths — go uncounted, labeled instead as syndromes like Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, and MS. “It’s been hidden for a long time,” said Brand, 75, and many other Lyme disease physicians and patients agree.
