Lyme Disease:  Lyme disease is an infection caused by the bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, and transmitted through the bite of an infected deer tick. In the U.S. two species of deer ticks are known to transmit Lyme disease: Ixodes scapularis (commonly found in the Northeast and Midwest areas of the country) and Ixodes pacificus (found on the West Coast). The ticks that transmit Lyme disease are typically very young and in the nymph stage of development. Thus, they are very small and hard to see. Read more.
