The same sunshine that is luring folks outside these days is causing a stir among ticks, too, requiring outdoor enthusiasts to be on the lookout, health officials say. “Ticks will come out of hibernation with sunshine and no snow,” said Dave Geske, vector control manager for the La Crosse County Health Department. “This is the time of year — from April to June — that is the highest for Lyme disease because ticks are emerging.” There could be a bumper crop of the deer ticks that cause Lyme and an escalating malady called anaplasmosis, said Steve Callister, director of Gundersen Lutheran’s microbiology research lab.
