Massachusetts takes mosquito control seriously, and well it should as the insects carry diseases. It spends about $10 million annually combating mosquitoes. Lyme disease-carrying ticks are a serious problem as well, but the state spends only in the tens of thousands of dollars combating them. In 2012, there were 33 cases of West Nile virus and seven cases of Eastern equine encephalitis, the two diseases linked to mosquitoes, in Massachusetts. In contrast, there were more than 5,000 confirmed and potential cases of Lyme disease. The state must step up its game against a potentially debilitating disease. Read more.
