KPU – HPU? Why is this Important with Lyme?

KPU? HPU? Why is this important?

It has been a year now that I have been free of Babesia aka “Babs or Babs Beast”. I have been doing wonderfully, no residual symptoms of any kind or “flare ups” even of my Lyme symptoms which I had had for years after I finished my treatment and was able to regain most of my life. It is amazing and this fact only compounds my belief that the “Post Lyme Syndrome” that is described in the CDC guidelines is chronic Lyme Disease. I would have never thought that my treatment for Babesia would cure me of those lingering Lyme symptoms from years ago. I guess it was fate that I was unable to recover from my surgery.

As great as I have been feeling this last year or longer, I still take every step to ensure my staying well. Just recently, even after being tested for KPU before, tests show that I have a metal toxicity and an overabundance of mercury in my body; on the flip side, I wasn’t deficient on the most likely culprits.

“Kryptopyrroluria (KPU) is a condition in which patients become zinc, [sic] biotin, B6, manganese, and omega-6 fatty acid deficient. As a result and in part, ‘their immune systems are like soldiers with guns without bullets’, says Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, MD, PhD.”₁   A “condition whereby the body” is unable to process and results “in severe mineral deficiencies.”

Keep learning! You are as young as your last bright idea.

In my research and as it was also explained, if I have a metal toxicity it will also create an imbalance in my body. It is my understanding that this treatment works on creating a balance to strengthen your body’s immune system. Dr. Klinghardt has found that “80% of his most challenging patients suffer from a basic and critical metabolic imbalance, sometimes called kryptopyrroluria” and by correcting this imbalance “patients who previously responded slowly to treatment make remarkable progress.” (Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt MD PhD is a well-known doctor in successfully treating chronic Lyme Disease as well as other illnesses.) Watch the video below.

I was presented with the choice to forego KPU treatment to lower my toxicity level or just leave it be. I discussed the pros and cons of the treatment. As someone said to me, “if it ain’t broke, why fix it” meaning that I am doing great now why rock the boat. I could undergo the treatment with the chance that it may “kick” something up i.e. the chance of my symptoms from Babesia or even Lyme Disease returning.  Then I asked: If I choose not to undergo KPU treatment what are the odds of my relapsing later on? Of course, there was no clear answer. I had to revert back to the studies by Dr. Klinghardt and I chose to go ahead with the treatment to strengthen my immune system and hopefully reduce the chances of ever dealing with my beasts once again.

This condition is not new by any means. It was discovered while working with schizophrenic patients in the late 1950’s early 1960’s and has been a contributing factor in autism, bipolar disorders and depression. Some symptoms include “white spots in the fingernails and poor dream recall are two of the hallmark symptoms. Others include poor breakfast appetite, pale skin, cold hands or feet, eosinophilia, light and sound intolerance, tremors or shaking, poor short-term memory, and more.”

I found the treatment particularly rough in the beginning and for the first month I had a constant extreme headache bordering on a migraine every day. The first few days I also felt very faint and as if I was about to black out. Scott, The BetterHealthGuy, could not have explained it any better:

“A word of caution – this is not an easy protocol. Once the protocol begins, heavy metals are often released and it takes a doctor skilled in addressing heavy metal detoxification to avoid worsening of symptoms. After this phase is addressed, the immune system often activates and the patient may experience symptoms of immune response to various microbes that it previously did not have the capacity to address. These may include fevers, flu-like symptoms, fatigue, and others. Thus, I do NOT advocate treating for KPU without working with a well-trained doctor.”

I kept in close contact with my doctor especially in the beginning until my body was able to adjust to the difference. Unlike The Betterhealthguy and chronic Lyme Disease patients, I have not experienced any feelings as if “the pot has been stirred,” thank goodness! However, I can see how those that are still battling the endless symptoms of chronic Lyme Disease even would have an extreme time dealing with this added struggle within their bodies.

It has been a little past a couple months that I have started the treatment, but I am doing well so far. I began this treatment with the hopes of improving my immune system and overall health; I also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of this on my health with my doctor. I went into it with my eyes wide open. Only time will tell if it helps or stirs something up, but at least I know that I made the choice knowing all of the options.

Choice is a gift given to everyone. It is a powerful gift that can change your life.

BetterHealthGuyConnie-71SIDEBAR: The BetterHealthGuy, Scott, and Lyme Bytes, Connie Strasheim, exceptionally discuss their experiences and research of KPU/HPU in their blogs. I would definitely take the time to read them since their discussions are bit more technical.  (I remember my brain fog and having to read things over, over and over again to absorb the content.)
